First US made Electric Sport Bike – Zero DS

2010 Zero DS is an electric motor utility sport bike with long travel suspension beefy tires. With an electric motor adding off-road capability the Zero DS makes its own category.

Though the bike can’t beat its gas powered brother, but the manufacturer earns a lot of praising of the neat work on the Zero DS. The ride takes styling from petrol powered motorcycles, but has precise hand made motors. The motorcycle is loaded with lots of lovely stuff. The bike has 18-lb alloy perimeter frame has speed sensor pickup, unique alloy kick stand, innovative front braking rotor, and rear bakes has hidden springs.

2010 Zero DS has a instrument panel that is sourced from petrol machine. The panel is readable in daylight and is practical. The displays also shows a green light when the motor gets started. How does the bike function?

The energy source for the bike comes from 4.0kwh lithium ion battery which is 20% stronger. The 277 lb weight bike has enough power to keep make it first when the lights turn green. The electric motor Zero can do 71 mph but the top speed fluctuates depending upon the temperature, wind direction and speed and also rider’s weight.

Riding is comfortable the steering lock is limited but overall the ride communicates well thanks to its knobby tires. To slice the ride on the corners the Zero DS has high mounted footpegs.

If you think the electric motor can’t do much think again as the bike is highway legal and can be used for urban and suburban commuting. The bike is not practical enough to be ridden interstate because of low range or electric powered vehicles. The range can be enhanced if the bike is kept below 40mph. this simply means the slower you drive the better you enjoy the ride. The bike is more likely to get its battery drained when driven fast and also with regular stops. When driven efficiently the ride can go 49.1 miles.

If you taking the bike for long ride than you need to be sure there is a charging point on the other side. The ride has no passenger pegs and is rated at 575 lb GVWR which simply means the ride can easily carry a 297 lb rider. The manufacturer has added some off-road features to the street mover. The 2010 Zero DS is 80% street and 20% off-road.

Though the motorcycles cant compete with petrol versions, but such electric off-roaders can be a better design on which future electric can depend.

Piaggio MP3 300ie Hybrid – Review

Last year Piaggio had introduced a 125cc MP3 Hybrid, for this year Piaggio as something bigger to offer. The 125cc MP3 is upgraded to 278cc that has a four stroke petrol engine and an electric motor.

The Piaggio MP3 300ie Hybrid is a three wheeled scooter and is fun to ride machine. The scooter can be made to run solely on either of the motors. The tri scooter with gasoline is better on performance and pumps out 25 horsepower, ten more than the earlier 125cc engine. MP3 has two wheels in the front and a single on rear, the design is innovative but is impractical.

Only the petrol engine is with updated hp figures, the electric motor is the same that pumps out a poor 3.5 bhp that takes the scooter no more than 20mph. I think that the electric motor is enough for the scooter to be used in parks and places where only electric vehicles are allowed. The electric motor limits only to be used in parks, its almost impractical to be used on the streets. When the scooter relies on gasoline, it reaches a reasonable 50mph and still has a little throttle twist that can be spared. Both of the front wheels stick to the road giving nice slicing turns. While bending the ride on the left, there are chances of the electric motor touching the ground, so that brought some restriction. Overall the MP3 gives a sporty ride.

MP3 Hybrid lacks storage space. The under seat cargo area is filled with batteries so no more storage space on the hybrid. The conventional Piaggio is missed on many aspects. The pricing for the hybrid is much more than the conventional Piaggio MP3 500. The MP3 500 being lower priced is far more powerful than the Mp3 Hybrid.

At this point of time there won’t be many eco conscious buyers, as the economy is not ready to pay the hybrid premium price.

The design of Piaggio MP3 300ie Hybrid is uncommon, Piaggio has done a great job in designing the scooter, but their work is just impractical as there are not many hybrid takes when there are other models available at lesser price and high performing figures.

Condor Motorcycles – Overview

Condor Motorcycles expands its roots as back in the 18th century. Before the Condor could be started, a company to manufacture metal products was started in 1893 by Edouard Scheffer. The newly built factory was located in Courvaivre. Edouard choose the particular location to set up the factory because the location was near to river Sorne from which electricity was produced. Another reason was the nearness of his friend’s empty building that was also near to railway station. The manufacturing factory was named Scheffer Freres in 1893. at the same time pure bicycles were manufactured in England and France. In 1904 the Swiss postal services showed interest in the products made by Scheffer Freres. Soon postal services stated buying products manufactured by Scheffer. Yet at this point of time no motorcycles were produced.

Later the company wanted more recognition in the new century. Company got the logo of condor which is a big bird. Otto Fricker decided to do something new and the result was a engine installed on a bicycle. The first motorcycle produced by the company was 1.5 horsepower engine that was basically installed on a bicycle. Motorcycle was just a basic engine that was without clutch and no gears. Those 1.5 hp bikes could take men to 50km/hr that was enough for a race rider. Later company decided to extend their offering; now the company was offering 3 horsepower and 5 horsepower engine. Engines with bigger displacement were manufactured from other engine manufactures. Soon motorcycles manufactured from ht company were considers as reliable and durable. In 1901, company got its new name Condor Werke AG. As all of the motorcycles of the old age the Condor Motorcycles were hard to handle and maintain. With no gear box the bike was with cycle pedals. Pedals help the motorcycle to climb mountain and steep slops. After World War I first gear box was invented. The new invented gearbox was with 2 gears that were operated with a liver from the tank.

Condor Motorcycles were brought by Swiss army. The hard and rigid use of the motorcycle by the army brought many unknown facts about the motorcycle. The clutch, frame and luggage rack were not shaken by hard army use. They soon updated to serve the army standards. The use of the motorcycles by the army proved to be a better testing ground better than company’s own. Condor Motorcycles were now more trusted among people as it was trusted and used by Swiss army.

From 1973 Condor started manufacturing A350. Condor A350 was with offered with a Ducati engine and in total 3000 units were produced. Condor A350 was with Ducati engine because of Condor’s limited manufacturing facility. The Condor A350 were used by the military as latest as early 2000.

Last Condor Motorcycles were produced in 1978, and A350 was the last motorcycle that rolled out of the production line. Production of bicycles was continued till 1995. Till date Condor factory is manufacturing non motorcycle related metal products.

Rumors also stated that the Condor A350 was total manufactured and assembled by Ducati and were brought to Condor from backdoors.

The A350 borrowed its engine from the successful Ducati 305 scrambler motor. As I’ve already mentioned that factory had limited manufacturing facilities, company was to first only order engine blocks from the Ducati but later decided to get the whole engine done form the Ducati. The Condor A350 had to be strong, they equipped it with steel exhausts pipe and muffler, the oil filler cap was larger to quickly fill the cap, and the compression ration was 8.2:1 which made the bike to run on bad gas.

Today Condor Motorcycles are brought by motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors. The good news is that these motorcycles are still offered for sale. A 1968 made Condor 250, again a Swiss Army bike, are available for sale in the U.S. Condor 250 came with a 250cc motor that was from Universal made in Swiss. The Condor 250 bike is just a dream for collectors and enthusiasts.

Honda CBR250R at $3999

American Honda very recently announced the pricing for the New Honda CBR250R.

The 2500cc segment bike was the most anticipated bike of the year for Honda lovers. The CBR250R entry level sport bike is quoted with a price tag of $3999. The pricing by Honda for the CBR250R is nearly identical to the Kawasaki Ninja 250R.

Honda has competitively priced the CBR to take the sales away from Green 250R. The Honda CBR250R is offered with ABS by shedding an extra of $500.

The Honda CBR250R is single cylinder where as the Ninja is powered by a 250cc twin parallel cylinders. If we compare the Ninja to Honda it’s not only the cylinders where both bikes differ. The fueling system is also different on both the makes. Kawasaki uses carburetor to feed the chambers, so that the overall cost of the bike can be kept as low as possible, the Honda uses Programmed Fuel Injection system. The CBR250 is with 6 gears with a chain drive.

Honda Bikes offers a lot with the CBR250R. the chassis that Honda gives to the CBR is a 37.. fork with Pro-Link rear suspension with 5 position preload adjustment. The wheelbase is 53.9in with seat height of 30.9in. for braking the Honda CBR depends on 296mm disk with 2 piston floating Nissin caliper in the front. The rear is with 220mm single piston caliper. The most fascinating option is the optional ABS which is something even the rival Ninja 250R doesn’t have. Again if we compare the two motorcycles the Honda wins with curb weight. The CBR250R is with 359 pounds the Ninja 250 R weighs 375 pounds.

The fairing on the CBR is layered that give the bike looks of the Honda VFR1200. On the front the bike has a long wind shield, behind of which is the analog tacho meter and blue backlit LCD screen.

The pricing which is just revealed for Honda is just identical to the Ninja, a 3999 figure. Ninja now has to differentiate the motorcycle so as to keep up with the sales. The Honda CBR250R can be bang on sales figure, as the Ninja 250R is the top selling model for Kawasaki as it replicates the bigg Ninja 1000R.

With the new 250cc Honda, the company has expanded its market to entry level riders. Though the bike is for new riders, it has all of the trill ingredients that make the bike to be tagged as R model.

The CBR250R will be manufactured in Honda production assembly in Thailand.

Swift Bikes – see and be seen

Swift Punisher is a chopper that is very visual. It’s the motorcycle that you would like be on while stopping at the red light. The kind of attentions it grabs is something that can be talked about.

Testing any motorcycle on the street you need to consider every aspect, every single detail which includes the reaction of people on the street when they get their eyes on the chopper and also the reaction of the bike while riding. The Swift Punisher is a attention grabber street chopper.

The illustrative color with 2 inch diameter frame makes every rider look cool behind its bar. Its large frame indulges your eyes to have a sure second look. The massive 2 inch diameter of this Swift Bikes are stretched to 3 inches and joins the steering neck at 36 degree rake. For a low seat height it lowers down for low seat height and gets skinned with stylish set of caps that covers the axle.

The body equipment is minimal. Body only includes one piece tank, small front fender and short rear fender and an oil tank that is standard sized. The rear fender is supported internally. It’s a single seater ride.

To make a standout form the crowed the Swift Punisher has 240×18-inch Metzeler, a polished one on the rear and a 21inchspoke wheel on the front. Suspension is only on the front with 41mm fork tubes. The fork assemble is mated on the triple trees that is something never to be found on any other chopper. Above the top tree are a speedo meter and a tachometer.

Other angelic features are in the hardware department. The powerhouse is the S&S 113ci motor that is accompanied by an S&S carb. The exhaust is diverted into one. Gear is extreme smooth; you don’t even feel the shifts. Most of the Swift Bikes are chain driven and a Rivera BruteIII primary.

The seating arrangement, I mean the ergonomics has mixed views for the bikes. For short heighten less than 5.10 inched riders it’s a tough time reaching the controls on the handle bar. And also have to be on a full stretched mode while riding. For 6 and above, ride is all well.

The Punisher is a true attention grabber. The bike is not only a see and be seen machine it’s also a machine that performs. The bike needed minimal input even on the tightest corners cutting like a knife in butter. The only problem I faced is the position of the side stand. The stand was mounted direct below the primary assembly, which made the side stand polish on the road while cornering.

The performance of the all of the Swift bikes is at par. The Swift Punisher makes quick and smooth between light to light. 75mph is where the Punisher finds comfort for cruising on a free way. But even little ups and downs on the free way gave a rigid reaction from the rear with regular bounce.

Overall the ride is solid with a big motor. The only thing that negative for me is its chain drive. Instead it should have belt drive.

Ducati 848 EVO Superbike, offers more for less

Ducati has uncovered the Ducati 848 EVO for 2011 in replacement to the standard 848.

The Ducati 484 EVO is much more capable than the standard Ducati 848 as the EVO is offered with increased acceleration, handling and braking and also the improvements with a lesser price than the predecessor.

The ride comes standard with Pirellis Diablo Supercorsa SP rubber that holds like a gecko. The critics have to say the EVO is the entry level Ducati Superbike. This Ducati bike has suspension, frame and braking components all from the Superbike 1198.

The major difference is the Ducati 848 EVO is with a 849cc smaller and lighter liquid cooled engine.

The bike is placed above the lighter middleweight 600cc bikes.

The new 848 EVO is different than the standard 2009 848 on many places. Starting from the engine the EVO is modified by re designing the L- cylinders and also the intake ports for better air flow.

The 848 EVO is with new camshafts that produce 13% higher lift than the standard 2009 model 848. The new EVO is more powerful so the limiter is set on 11,300 rpm.

The timing belts now have ventilation slits in them to ventilate the excess heat. The rebuilt 848 EVO now produces 6 horsepower than before.

To slower the bike at high speeds the two piece Brembo calipers is now replaced with one piece monobloc that is borrowed from the 1198. The Calipers grips on the 320mm diameters. Rear braking is kept unchanged with no ABS option.

Blessed with new brakes the Ducati 848 EVO can now halt 20% better with the same amount of pressure that was used in the previous 848.

Other changes include the Pirrelli tires with super grip on the track. Also chassis is redesigned with horizontally mounted non adjustable steering damper, mounted between top triple clamp and the tank.

Lastly the Ducati is offered in three colors styling the Dark, Ducati Red and the Artic White Silk. The Dark is offered with a price of $12,995m, and the later two with $1000 extra.

Ducati’s New 848 EVO is highly appreciated as Ducati has blessed the 848EVO with more power and design advancements, all this making the bike to cost $1000 lesser.

The 2011 KTM 50 SXS is built on the same platform to that of the original KTM 50 SX bike. For the New Year the KTM is equipped with new features that make the ride top on the race track.

The time is just right for KTM to uncover the 2011 KTM 50 SXS as holidays are nearby. The 50cc off road motorcycle is for early riders between age group of 5-10. The new KTM 50 SXS is no child play; the ride is equipped with KTM’s 50cc engine and off-road equipments that are all to take the real dirt.

The thing I like about the bike is its styling that is almost all identical to its 450cc big brother. Kids are surly going to enjoy the ride, but the motor installed is highly capable, every ride should be made under adult’s guidance.

The new KTM 50cc ride is equipped with lots of high performance parts, from the expansion chamber to its swing arm and rear springs and front shocks. The motorcycle is track legal and is just perfect combination of aluminum and steel with which the starters can show up their skills.

Also the installed performance parts on the 50 SXS can be installed on the previous 50 SX. The individual performance parts can be brought from KTM Bikes authorized dealer.

The 2011 KTM 50 SXS is the most talked because it comes with KTM PowerParts which includes quick responsive throttle assembly, SXS clutch setting, 38-T rear sprocket and Renthal diamond grips.

The ride also includes standard Race Tech SXS Shocks with adjustability, FMF SXS pipe and Race Tech SXS Fork internals with extreme damping adjustability.

There is no disappointment for the KTM 50 SX owners as all the above mentioned Performance Parts are installable and available at KTM Dealership.
